Military ID Cards
Military ID cards are important to servicemembers and ex-servicemembers because they allow holders to access government benefits such as welfare, legal assistance, Tricare, education benefits, commissaries and course discounts, among many others. Those who are eligible for these benefits include active-duty servicemembers, dependents of servicemembers, retirees, reserves and select veterans. There are, however, specific conditions that veterans must meet in order to qualify for a veteran's card, which entitles them to all the military benefits and discounts. Read the details below to learn about the types of military ID cards that are used by uniformed servicemembers and their dependents.
Guard and Reserve Family Member ID Card, DD Form 1173-1 (Red)
This type of military ID card is issued to dependents of former servicemembers who are not on retired pay, as well as reserve members who are not on active duty or retired pay. It is also issued to dependents of reserve servicemembers who passed away after receiving NOE. Family member cardholders have access to federal privileges, but they are not eligible for medical benefits. In order for service to be provided to the cardholder, he or she must also submit the servicemember's orders to active duty or a commissary privilege card.
